Omega-3 for Kids’ Anxiety and Focus: What to Look For and What to Avoid
Omega-3 is one of the most well-researched supplements for children’s brain health. Here’s how to choose the right one.
Fish oil is one of those supplements that sounds like old-fashioned advice — the kind of thing your grandmother might have suggested. But the research on omega-3 fatty acids and children’s brain health is genuinely strong.
Here’s what you need to know — including the things most supplement companies don’t want you to know.
Why Omega-3 Matters for Anxious Brains
The brain is approximately 60% fat — and a significant portion of that fat is DHA, one of the two key omega-3 fatty acids (the other being EPA). DHA is critical for brain structure and function. EPA is particularly associated with mood regulation.
Research has found associations between low omega-3 status and increased anxiety, depression, ADHD symptoms, and difficulty with emotional regulation. Several studies have found that omega-3 supplementation reduces anxiety symptoms in children.
EPA vs DHA — Which Matters More?
For mood and anxiety: EPA is the star. Look for a supplement with a higher EPA-to-DHA ratio — ideally 2:1 or higher.
For brain development and focus: DHA is the priority.
For most anxious children: you want both, with EPA slightly higher.
What to Look For on the Label
This is where most parents go wrong. The label might say “1000mg fish oil” — but that tells you almost nothing. What matters is the amount of EPA and DHA.
Look for: at least 500mg of combined EPA and DHA per serving. And check the ratio.

The Freshness Problem
Oxidised fish oil is worse than no fish oil. It smells strongly rancid, causes fishy burps, and may actually be harmful. Fresh fish oil should smell mild and clean.
Cut a capsule open. If it smells strongly of fish, it’s oxidised. Buy a better brand.
Algae-Based Omega-3 for Plant-Based Families
Fish get their omega-3 from algae — so you can go straight to the source. Algae-based omega-3 is sustainable, vegan, and contains both EPA and DHA. It’s slightly more expensive but a good option.

How Long Before Results
Like magnesium, omega-3 works cumulatively. Allow 8-12 weeks before assessing whether it’s making a difference.
