L-Theanine for Kids: A Gentle Supplement for Calm and Focus

The amino acid in green tea that calms without sedating — and what the research says about giving it to children.

L-theanine is one of my favourite supplements for anxious children — and one of the least talked about.

It’s an amino acid found naturally in green tea. It promotes alpha brain waves — the same brain state associated with calm alertness. Not drowsiness. Not sedation. Just… calm.

Here’s what you need to know.

What L-Theanine Does

L-theanine increases the production of GABA, serotonin, and dopamine in the brain — all associated with calm, wellbeing, and focus. It also reduces the physical symptoms of stress: heart rate, cortisol, muscle tension.

Crucially, it does this without sedating the child. This makes it useful during the day — before school, before a difficult event, on a high-anxiety morning — not just at bedtime.

The Research

A randomised controlled trial published in 2019 found that L-theanine supplementation significantly improved sleep quality and reduced anxiety in children with ADHD. Other studies have found benefits for focus, attention, and stress reactivity.

It’s not a cure. It’s not a replacement for therapeutic work. But as one tool in a toolkit, it’s genuinely helpful.

Is It Safe for Children?

L-theanine has an excellent safety profile and is generally considered safe for children. It’s been in the food supply for centuries in green tea. Always consult your paediatrician before starting.

When and How to Use It

For school mornings: 30 minutes before leaving the house.

For sleep: 30-60 minutes before bed.

For specific events: 30-60 minutes beforehand.

Typical doses for children: 50-100mg. Start with the lowest dose.

Combining With Magnesium

L-theanine and magnesium glycinate work beautifully together. Many parents use the combination at bedtime — it’s gentle, non-habit-forming, and very effective for anxious children who struggle to sleep.
